Although this photo is the cover my book, I’m not posting it here as a promotion. I’m posting it for several reasons. First, it’s an image of Garrison Avenue in the 1940s, the central artery in downtown Fort Smith. Fort Smith is my hometown. Second, it’s an image from urban Arkansas. Third, it’s just damn beautiful and rare in that it depicts an Arkansas city at night during a period in which night photography was especially uncommon. I could write more, but I’ll stop for now and let it speak for itself. Photographer: Bob McCann

Snowfall

It’s times like this I wish to remember when I’m old and grey. The time when I was tired, maybe a bit sad and confused about life. When 4am passed and I decided to venture out into the night. Just my pyjamas and oversized hat.  When I ran across the street in barefeet to capture the small amount of beauty in this large city, before it all melts away. Swearing silently because my feet are burning  cold, but I’m far too interested in other things. I want to remember the time when the city was asleep, yet everything was bright. When I was longing for my forest back, though it could never happen. I want to remember the times like this, when I’m completely and utterly myself.

Fort Smith, Arkansas circa 1965. A magical place where the streets are wide, the car tail fins are big, and the traffic stops for jaywalkers.

Perfect morning to start my daily ride. There was around 200ft of elevation change with it as well. Yesterday I made it up all 3 hills, but today I could only do 2. Maybe doing this after a 12hr work day is a little more strenuous. I feel great though.

If anyone knows of a tracker that does elevation as well please let me know.
